Established in 1974, the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) New Delhi Centre is one of the premier institutions in India dedicated to research, teaching, and application of statistics, natural sciences, and social sciences. Initially operating from a different location, the centre moved to its current campus in 1975.

The New Delhi centre houses several specialized units that contribute to its research and academic excellence: Statistics and Mathematics Unit (SMU), focused on advanced research in statistical methods and mathematical theories, SMU plays a pivotal role in the institute's academic endeavors; Economics and Planning Unit (EPU), this unit conducts research in economic theory, econometrics, and planning, addressing both national and international economic challenges; Computer and Communication Sciences Unit (CCSU), dedicated to research in computer science, information technology, and communication systems, CCSU supports the growing intersection of statistics and computing; and Sampling and Official Statistics Unit (SOSU), specializing in survey sampling techniques and official statistics, SOSU collaborates with governmental and non-governmental organizations to improve data collection and analysis methodologies.
