The college traces its origins to May 1910, when it was established in Lahore by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a visionary philanthropist known for founding The Tribune newspaper and Punjab National Bank. Following the partition of India in 1947, the institution was re-established in Karnal on September 16, 1949, under the management of the Dyal Singh Trust Society, Delhi. This revival was largely due to the efforts of Dewan Anand Kumar, the founding Vice-Chancellor of Punjab University, Chandigarh, and a founding member of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India.
Dyal Singh P.G. College is affiliated with Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, and has been recognized by the University Grants Commission under sections 2(f) and 12(B) since September 1956. The college achieved accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an A grade in its first cycle on February 23, 2004.
