About The Indian Society Of International Law

Established in 1959 through the efforts of V.K. Krishna Menon, the Indian Society of International Law (ISIL) is a premier national institution dedicated to the study and promotion of international law. The inaugural meeting was graced by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who also served as the society's patron. ISIL aims to foster nationwide interest in international law by: promoting the study and development of international law; interpreting the application of international law, particularly in the Indian context; encouraging comparative studies of international law applications in other states; facilitating research and organizing regional branches to disseminate knowledge; and collaborating with similar societies both domestically and internationally. Through its teaching wing, the Indian Academy of International Law and Diplomacy, ISIL offers postgraduate diploma courses in various branches of international law, including International Law, Law of International Institutions, and Diplomacy; Human Rights, International Humanitarian, and Refugee Laws; International Trade and Business Law; and Intellectual Property Rights Law. ISIL publishes the Indian Journal of International Law, contributing significantly to scholarly discourse in the field. Additionally, the society has produced various books and monographs on international law topics, further enriching legal literature. The society organizes annual summer and winter courses on contemporary issues in international law, providing platforms for legal professionals, scholars, and students to engage with current developments. ISIL maintains a comprehensive library with an extensive collection of journals, periodicals, and yearbooks, serving as a valuable resource for research and study in international law. Through these initiatives, ISIL continues to play a pivotal role in advancing the understanding and application of international law in India.
