Established on October 15, 1970, the Central Sanskrit University, formerly known as Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, is a central university headquartered in New Delhi, India. It functions as the central agency for implementing Sanskrit-related policies and schemes of the Government of India, working closely with the Ministry of Education.
In March 2020, the Indian Parliament passed the Central Sanskrit Universities Act, 2020, upgrading the institution from a deemed university to a central university, along with two other universities: Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University and National Sanskrit University.
The university offers a comprehensive range of educational programs in Sanskrit language and literature, including courses from Class 6 to 9, undergraduate (Shastri/BA), postgraduate (Acharya/MA), and doctoral (Vidyavaridhi/Ph.D.) levels. Additionally, it provides B.Ed., M.Ed., and distance learning programs in Sanskrit.
As a multi-campus university, Central Sanskrit University has established campuses across various regions of India, including Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Odisha, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, and Tripura. This extensive network facilitates the promotion and preservation of Sanskrit education and research nationwide.
Through its dedicated efforts, the university continues to play a pivotal role in the revival and propagation of Sanskrit, contributing significantly to the preservation of India's rich cultural and linguistic heritage.
