Government Medical College Omandurar was established in 2015 as the first government medical college in Chennai after the colonial era. Spread across nearly 70 acres on the historic Omandurar Estate, the campus houses seven modern tower blocks that accommodate the medical college, teaching hospital, hostels, and faculty residences. Located in Triplicane near Marina Beach and Chepauk Stadium, it enjoys excellent connectivity with Government Estate Metro and Chepauk MRTS stations less than a kilometer away.
The college is recognized by the National Medical Commission and affiliated with Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. It offers a full-time MBBS program with 100 seats, as well as PG diplomas and paramedical programs including DMLT and technician courses. Students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities such as digital lecture halls, modern labs, a skills lab with mannequins, an anatomical museum, a well-stocked library with over 7,000 books, and a 400-bed multi-specialty hospital with 14 operation theatres, CT, and MRI facilities.
Hostel facilities are provided on campus with separate towers for boys and girls, student-run mess, CCTV security, and sports amenities. The MBBS program is competitively priced at around ₹75,000 for the full 5.5-year course, with hostel charges of about ₹1,500 per month. Students also receive hands-on training through clinical internships, with monthly stipends between ₹25,000 and ₹30,000 and strong placement opportunities via residencies and postings.
Government Medical College Omandurar stands out for transforming a former legislative complex into a modern tertiary care teaching hospital, integrating competency-based MBBS curriculum, and emphasizing community medicine through urban and rural health centers. It is emerging as a key destination for aspiring doctors seeking quality, affordable medical education in Tamil Nadu.
