Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Center for Biomedical Research (ACBR) is a distinguished institution under the University of Delhi, established in 1991. It offers advanced education and research opportunities in biomedical sciences. The center provides postgraduate and doctoral programs, including a two-year M.Sc. in Biomedical Science, an integrated four-year M.Sc.-Ph.D. program, and a three-year Ph.D. in Biomedical Science. Admissions are entrance-based, with eligibility criteria requiring relevant bachelor's or master's degrees with a minimum of 55% marks.
ACBR is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to support its academic and research endeavors. The institute houses modern laboratories featuring advanced scientific instruments such as fluorimeters, gel documentation systems, real-time PCR machines, confocal microscopes, and facilities for mammalian and bacterial cell culture. Additionally, there are dedicated workshops for mechanical, electronics, and glass blowing purposes. The Science Instrumentation Centre includes liquid helium and nitrogen plants, an electron microscope, and spectrometers. A well-stocked library with a vast collection of specialized books and access to numerous scientific journals further enhances the learning environment.
To support and encourage meritorious students, ACBR offers several scholarships and fellowships. The Jean and Ashit Ganguly Education Scholarship provides ₹1,500 per month based on merit and selection committee recommendations. The Jawahar Bhawan Trust Merit-cum-Means Scholarship offers ₹1,000 per month for M.Sc. students. The Prof. Gurbaksh Singh Education Fellowship awards ₹6,000 per annum based on merit and interview performance, while the Prof. H. C. Gaur Education Fellowship grants ₹4,000 per annum to one M.Sc. student each year, considering merit, interview performance, and financial need.
As of March 2023, Professor Sunit Kumar Singh, an esteemed molecular virologist with extensive experience from institutions like Banaras Hindu University and the University of Wuerzburg, Germany, serves as the Director of ACBR.
