Established on October 1, 1917, Patna University (PU) is the oldest university in Bihar and the seventh oldest university of the entire Indian subcontinent. During its golden era in the mid-20th century, Patna University was widely referred to as the 'Oxford of the East' due to its exceptionally high standards of teaching, rigorous academic discipline, and the outstanding calibre of its graduates. Situated on the scenic southern bank of the holy River Ganges in Patna, the university has been the cornerstone of higher education in Bihar, serving as the main academic engine for Eastern India. Patna College (established in 1863), which became a constituent college of the university, is often called the mother of all colleges in Bihar. Currently, undergraduate and postgraduate admissions are managed through the Patna University Common Entrance Test (PUCET) or merit-based parameters set by the university administration. While Patna University's legacy lies heavily in producing civil servants and academicians, it has actively developed placement cells in recent years to cater to the corporate sector. Companies in IT, banking, and retail (such as Wipro, TCS, and ICICI Bank) conduct placement drives for vocational and science graduates. The university administration is currently focusing on a massive modernization drive. This includes upgrading laboratory equipment in Science College, digitizing the central library (which houses rare manuscripts and ancient books), installing campus-wide high-speed internet, and constructing new hostel blocks to accommodate the growing number of outstation students, aiming to restore PU to its past glory.
