Introduction & Foundational Philosophy

Established in 1969 by an Act of Parliament, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was named in honor of India's first Prime Minister, who envisioned it as a center of academic excellence and social progression. Admissions are now conducted through the CUET PG and specialized entrance exams for M.Tech and Ph.D. programs. A unique feature of JNU’s admission policy is the 'Deprivation Point System'. Under this system, extra marks (deprivation points) are awarded during selection to candidates belonging to backward districts (classified into different quartiles based on development metrics) and female/transgender candidates. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) elections are entirely managed and conducted by the students themselves through an independent student election committee, without any interference from the administration or political parties. JNU's alumni network is exceptionally influential, spanning across international organizations (UN, World Bank), national politics (including Cabinet Ministers like S.
